- KFUPM is fortunate in having one of the finest libraries in the
- Middle East. It is an "open stack" library. This means that you
- have free access to its resources. You are allowed to walk into
- the stacks (the areas where books are shelved) and find whatever
- you need.
-
- The KFUPM library currently has over 240,000 volumes, 75% of
- which are in the subject areas of science and engineering. The
- humanities and social sciences account for the other 25%. There
- are 3, 500 titles in periodicals, and many of the back issues of
- these periodicals are kept on microfilm or microfiche. Although
- most of the library's holdings are in English, there are about
- 17,000 volumes in Arabic and numerous volumes in other major
- languages.
-
- In order to use the library effectively, you must know what
- services it offers. Therefore, in this part of Unit 2, we will
- briefly describe five ways in which the library can serve you.
-
- First of all, the library will help you locate materials. This
- service is provided by the Reference Department, which will
- probably be your first point of contact with our library. As any
- serious user of library resources will tell you, the Reference
- Department is indispensable to research. Whether you are trying
- to locate a particular book, looking for a dictionary, or
- wondering where a certain magazine is kept, the reference room
- is always the place to start. Here is a list of some of the
- types of books which the reference section contains. Your
- teacher will explain their purpose to you.
-
- One of the most important library tools in the reference section
- is the computer catalog, available to users through terminals
- located in the central corridor of the plateau level. This
- catalog, which we will describe later in more detail, is
- designed to help you find books quickly and easily. It has
- replaced the older card catalog, located in two long wooden
- cabinets between the terminals and the lifts.
-
- A second major service of the library is provided by the
- Circulation Department. This department exists to help you
- borrow books and other library materials. Whenever you find a
- book you would like to borrow, take it to the circulation desk
- near the main entrance of the plateau level. There, the
- librarian on duty will check the book out to you for a period of
- one month. You may borrow a maximum of five books, but remember
- to return them promptly by the time they are due. Periodicals
- and reference books may not be taken out of the library, so make
- sure, before approaching the desk, that the materials you want
- are intended for circulation.
-
- The third major service of the library is offered by the Serials
- Department, which is responsible for the periodicals collection.
- Periodicals are magazines, newspapers and journals, and they are
- so called because they are published "periodically," i.e.,
- weekly, monthly, etc. If you examine the plan of the plateau
- level, you will notice that most of the current periodicals are
- located at the rear of the level, though many popular magazines
- and newspapers are displayed at the front near the main
- entrance. The issues that you will find on the plateau level are
- less than two years old and are arranged by call number (all
- library materials have identification numbers known as call
- numbers). If you wish to find a particular magazine or journal
- in the periodicals collection, you must first get its call
- number from the periodicals printout at the reference desk. The
- printout will tell you not only if the library has the issue you
- want, but also approximately where it is located. If the
- periodical issue you want is more than two years old, it will be
- in either the main stacks on levels 3 and 4, or in microform
- (microfilm or microfiche) on level 3.
-
- The last two library services may be described more briefly. The
- Media Center contains a collection of audiovisual materials such
- as films, tapes, slides, maps, and charts, as well as the
- various items of equipment needed for audiovisual presentations.
- The Acquisitions Department is concerned with selecting,
- ordering and processing new materials for the library.
-
- This brief introduction has been intended only to give you an
- overview of library facilities. In the next two parts of this
- unit, we will go into detail with some important information
- about finding books and periodicals.
